Other Features
Summary: The Other Features section is used to add and alter some special attributes to the header section and other areas of the page that apply. Many of the features in this area can also be pushed out to all pages from .sitepref but some are only available from the form itself. Activation of certain features may conflict with global design elements however so be careful what you use and test it against your site design before using them.
Include Sub-tab
[Image:untitled1.png
1) Include Date on top of the Navigation Sidebar
Function: This option will place the current date at the top of the Navigation Sidebar.
Note: this feature may conflict slightly with some settings - particularly if an image is set as the first item in the list in the content sub-tab of the Navigation Sidebar. In some cases, images are used to create the effect of having a continuous image bleed from the Header Section to the Navigation Sidebar. If this is the case in your site, the Date at the top of the bar will insert itself before the image you are using and create a visual break which you may not want.
2) Include Date on top of the Information Sidebar
Function: This option will place the current date at the top of the Information Sidebar.
3) Include "Last Modified" at bottom of page
Function: This function will add the date of the last alteration of the web page at the bottom of the web page.
Note: the Last Modified font color is established by the setting of the Summary Bar Text color in the .sitepref form (which means you must consult your RWD Site Administrator for assistance with this feature).
4) Include a Counter at bottom of page (currently MS Windows Only)
Function: This function will add a visit counter at the bottom of the web page. An extra application must be installed on the FirstClass Server for this function to work. This application file may be downloaded from our website at http://www.firstclassdepot.com - follow the links to the downloads page.
Generally, people who wish to have counters in their pages do so by downloading freeware from any one of a huge number of available sites. Wide use of these counters is generally not a good idea however because they increase the bandwidth required for each page.
Note: As of this writing the freeware counter we use does not work in the MAC environment.
4a) Counter Keyword
Function: a Unique word that identifies the page you are setting the counter for in order to differentiate it from the other pages in the database
5) Include Breadcrumbs
Function: Breadcrumbs appear at the top left of the page (above the topmost section, regardless of the object layout order (see Header Tab Help for an explanation of the object layout function). Breadcrumbs allow users to see a Hierarchical representation of where they are in the site. As they go deeper into or come back out of the site, the breadcrumb trail gets longer or shorter. Users can jump to a particular level by clicking on its breadcrumb.
Note: the Breadcrumbs font color is established by the setting of the Summary Bar Text color in the .sitepref form (on the Appearance Tab).
6) Change link color to
Function: In some cases, you may wish to set the color of text that is associated with links in the page body. Normally, this color is blue and underlined. Using this control in addition to the quoted text feature in the page body editing toolbar (see image), you can set the color of links to whatever you wish.
The quoted text feature in FirstClass is normally used to highlight text with a gray background. If you wish to change the color of links in RWD using the Change link color to control, create the link in the page body, highlight the text, and click the quoted text button as the image below illustrates:
6a) Remove Underline
Function: Normally, links made in the page body are underlined. You can remove the underline using this control.
7) Include Search
Function: Creates a search field and label in the location specified.
Notes: In some beta versions of RWD, we put a control called "include Search" in the Navigation Sidebar Tab. This would create a control on the Navigation Sidebar of the web page, at the bottom (after all other content), which would give the web user the option of conducting a search of the website based on criteria entered into the search field. When we tested this, we realized that users may want a search to appear in some other location. We moved this feature from the Navigation Sidebar Tab and put it here so that you can now choose to put the search control in the original location (bottom of the Navigation Sidebar) or at the top of the Nav Sidebar, as the first item on the Information Sidebar, or the last item on the Information Sidebar.
You may also wish to include a search in place of the second banner image (see the Header Tab Help for this)
Note: The results of the search will display in a special window that is largely a FirstClass template. Only limited modification of the look of this page may be made and it can only be done by the RWD Site Administrator.
8) Include "Contact Us" in the header
Function: This will make a mail link that will display in the Header section, on the right side with the displayed title of ' Contact Us'. This link, when clicked, will open up the internet user's default mail client with the address in the To: field of the mail message set to the value entered in the Your Email field below.
8a) Your Email
Function: This field will supply the email address to the message created when the web user clicks the Contact Us link.
9) Include "Log In" in the header
Function: This option will activate a link that will appear above the Header Section on the web page. The link will give the web user the option of authenticating into FirstClass from your page. The login is to the standard FirstClass Internet Services version of the user's FirstClass Desktop. If you want to use the special RWD login templates, you should create a link (the link syntax is /login) in the Navigation Sidebar or the Information Sidebar or the Header/Footer Links Bar and set the Special Format for the link to "FC Templates".
10) Include "Help" in the header
Function: This option will activate a link to another page in your site that you can create to help the web user navigate your site. The link will appear on the right side of the page Header Section.
10a) "Help" Link to
Function: This field contains the path/file name of the web page that you make for the "Help" link.
11) Printable
Function: Sometimes, you may want your page content to be printable in such a way that only the content prints and not the rest of the web page (the navigation links, headers, graphics, etc.) This control creates a special link at the top of the Page Body section which will open a version of the page content that is stripped of all web wrappings and contains a print button. The options in the control allow you to choose between having a Print link appear in text or as a button.
*Tips and Tricks:
Many of the special features on this tab are better set as a system-wide attribute by the RWD Site Administrator. They appear on the individual Page Builder form so that you can make exceptions for specific pages in the event a feature is not enabled on a site-wide basis.
The Last Modified option will show visitors to your site that you are keeping your site fresh by updating it often (if you do that is!).
We don't recommend using more than one date (either on top of the Navigation Sidebar or the Information Sidebar, not both).
Page Related Sub-tab
1) Do Not remove Information Sidebar when Special Formats are used
Function: By default, when you use any of the special formats to open conferences or calendars or folders, RWD suppresses the Information Sidebar feature on that page in order to make room for the object. In some designs, you may choose to alter this behavior and preserve the Information Sidebar irrespective of the content that gets called.
when Un-checked (default), the Information Sidebar will be suppressed, when checked, it will not and will display on the page (if there is an Information Sidebar to display).
Navigation Style Sub-tab
Padding for Embedded Objects on Navigation Sidebar
1) Padding Left
Function: This setting will add space (padding) to the left of any embedded objects you use in the Navigation Sidebar. This is helpful if you are using a background image for the Navigation Sidebar and your design requires that objects on the Nav Sidebar align in some specific way.
2) Padding Right
Function: This field is the same as the above field except that it adds padding to the right of embedded objects.
