Creating Websites with RWD

Website conferences

Websites in RWD are contained in Conferences (as opposed to folders) because they are usually managed by someone other than the FirstClass Administrator and with conferences, you can assign variable permissions to them so that different people or groups of people can have different levels of access to the content.

The Rapid Web Designer conference in the FirstClass Applications contains a sample site that you can copy to get started with.  This sample site (the School_Template) is located in the copy machine that can be found inside the FirstClass Administrators only conference.   The copy machine will create a copy of anything that is in it or aliased to it if the button on the Toolbar is clicked when that object has the focus.

3212008_20138_00.pngCaution!!  The copy machine is potentially very dangerous!!  If you make a copy of an object with large amounts of original data / objects in it, you will create a new object with that same amount of content in it.  This means that you could increase the size of your Network Store dramatically if you inadvertently make a copy of a large enough object. Use this feature with a great deal of caution.   It should only be used to make copies of website conferences once you have built your template out and want to deploy multiple copies of it.

Root Sites are those conferences that are registered as websites in the Multiple Sites and Languages form and are located in the WWW folder of Internet Services (or in the WWW folder of an internet services cluster).  These sites (conferences) should be made members of the RWD Root Sites CG container group so that they receive the appropriate permissions for viewing from the web and for editing inside FirstClass.

The permissions for these conferences should be very simply set to the RWD Root Sites CG (a conference group - see above).  The image below illustrates what the permissions for the Root Website conferences should look like.

For all other conferences in your sites (other than the root sites themselves), the conferences should be members of the RWD Sites CG and Calendars should be members of the RWD Sites CalG

Configuring Your Website Conferences

The conferences you create to use as websites must be configured to include certain objects before they will function as websites.

In order for RWD to work, the FirstClass Standard Web Templates must contain an alias of the RWD web templates and a copy of the RWD master template, 2089.  If these two objects are missing, you must re-alias and recopy respectively from the RWD Templates folder that is located in the RWD Application container (which, in turn, is located in the Rapid Web Designer application container).
The image below illustrates the objects that should be contained in each website root conference:

Registering Your Sites

Once the conferences are created in the WWW container and been configured to act as websites, they must be registered in the Multiple Sites and Languages form which is located in the Internet Services Folder.  Registering Sites In the Multiple Sites and Languages Form is only part of the requirement; you must make sure that a valid DNS points to your IS Server's IP Address.  Below is an example of a Multiple Sites and Languages form that contains a number of sites in it - some of these sites are named with numbers but your sites will likely be the names of your schools.

Note:  Whenever you add sites to your FirstClass system, make sure to reload the Internet Services configuration before attempting to view the sites with a browser.
