FirstClass User Groups and Conference (container) Groups

RWD Installation creates several User groups and Container Groups on your server.  In future releases, we expect to create additional container and calendar groups to expand the functionality of RWD.  The following groups are all required by RWD and should not be renamed or changed in any way.  As a FirstClass administrator, you may wish to change some of the permissions associated with the various groups, but we recommend that you do not.

3212008_121247_0.pngRWDe Site Administrators Group
This user group is meant to be assigned to those individuals who have been trained in the development of sites with RWD and are responsible for the management of them.
Membership in this group will (once setup) put the RWDe Administrators resource conference on the member's FirstClass desktop and extend Controller permissions to all conferences in the system that are members of the RWD Root Sites CG, RWD Sites CG and RWD Sites CalG.  Security between websites is managed by subscriptions - RWDe Site Administrators can only edit those sites to which they have subscriptions.

3212008_121247_0.pngRWD  Approvers Group - Legacy feature, not present on new installations
This group is not really useful as the approval feature in RWD is only moderately effective.  As such, this user group is not present on installations of RWD 3 and above but will remain on existing sites to support legacy functionality.  Its intended purpose was to model to members desktops the RWD Approvers conference which contains the RWD Approvers version of the RWD page Builder form.  The approvers form contains a checkbox that allows an individual to with that form to open a user's page and set the page to approved. This is of limited use as changes to the form do not unapproved the page and any page that is set as approved can be copied to create a new, approved page.
Basically, don't use this group or this feature - it only still exists as a legacy support feature.

3212008_121247_0.pngRWD Advanced Builders Group
This group is designed to include users who have demonstrated proficiency with RWD and responsibility with its use.  Generally not used for a year or more after the initial deployment of RWD, the Advanced Builders User group will, once setup, put the RWD Advanced Builders Conference on the member's desktops.  This conference contains a version of the RWD page builder form that has almost every control on it, including the Use Local Form Settings control which, if allowed in the RWDe Administrator Form, will allow the user to create web pages that do not look like the global template.  Generally, membership in this group is very limited and consists only of very capable users who are trusted to adhere to administrative guidelines for web page creation.

3212008_121247_0.pngRWD Builders Group
This group is the most commonly used group in RWD.  Almost all teachers or basic site builders should be made members of this group.  The RWD Builders conference is modeled onto this group's model desktop and that will give all members the basic RWD Page Builder form and the related help files on their desktops.
The basic Builder form is designed to remove almost all of the formatting choices and requirements from the process so that the members of this group can create web pages with very little effort and be relieved of the need to decide on page design - allowing them to just focus on the content itself.

3212008_121310_1.pngContainer Groups Used with RWD:

Core groups

3212008_121310_1.pngRWD Root Sites CG
Only the root conferences of websites should be members of this conference group.  Special rules and resources are included with this Group and only RWDe Site Administrators should have administrative access to conferences that belong to this group.  Website conferences belonging to this group will have two extra toolbar buttons that will allow RWDe Site Administrators to deploy teacher websites as well as add administrative objects to websites.

3212008_121310_1.pngRWD Sites CG
Almost all other conferences in your RWD sites should be members of this conference group.  Special rules and resources are included with this Group and when a conference is a member of this group, it will receive special toolbars and access to the Builder Pickers through those toolbars. All teacher websites are members of this container group

The following image shows the permission structure of the RWD Sites CG

3212008_121310_1.pngRWD Folder Toolbar
Folders created using the RWD pickers have toolbars that are the same as conferences that are members of the RWD Sites CG - the toolbars give users access to pickers and other functions involved in web publishing.

3212008_121310_1.pngRWD Blog CG
The RWD Message Blog feature is based on the idea that a conference with messages in it can be rendered on the web in a blog type view.  These conferences can be shared andcan even have real-world mail aliases if outside contributions are desired (permissions and directory settings for this functionality must currently be set manually).  The RWD Blog CG (container group) sets the appropriate permissions for conferences to be accessible from the web and for RWD builders to contribute messages to the conferences if they are subscribed to them.

3212008_121310_1.pngRWD Graphics Gallery CG
This group gives the Graphics Gallery features to any conference that is a member of it

3212008_121310_1.pngRWD File CG
This group gives any conference belonging to it a special layout and toolbar that is optimized for the storage of uploaded files.

3212008_121310_1.pngRWD GlobalControl CG
This group gives the Global Control features to containers that are members of it.  The Global Control resources and toolbars are delivered to the system through this container group.

Secondary groups

3212008_121310_1.pngRWD Portal CG
This group sets a container to require a login in order to open it and view the contents on the web. It is not recommended that you use this container group unless you have a clear understanding of its functionality and the implications of its use.

3212008_121310_1.pngRWD Document CG
An evolving feature of RWD is the ability to see RWD web pages differently than they normally appear inside FirstClass.  While still appearing as web pages from a browser, a new form can be used inside FirstClass to view documents with different fields than the normal RWD fields. The intention of this feature is to eventually provide a method of accessing policy and other documents in a managed way from inside FirstClass while still providing these documents out on the web as printable documents.

This group is not intended for any user-defined containers but is a FirstClass Depot resource group to allow us to set the program container properties.

This group is not intended for any user-defined containers but is a FirstClass Depot resource group to allow us to set the program container properties.

Calendars that are to be viewed on the web should also belong to a permissions group.  RWD uses the RWD Sites CalG which gives the various Builder Groups the appropriate access and lets Web Visitors see the details they need to see on the calendars.
