Inside the Rapid Web Designer Container
Inside the Rapid Web Designer application conference, you will, depending on which version of RWD you have, find that a number of other objects will be present. The image below illustrates what you should find and the following sections describe the contents.
Note: This document outlines the contents of the RWD User Templates container and the RWD console. For documentation regarding the RWD Application container (A in the image below), see the document titled: Installed Material - RWD Application
B) Inside the RWD User Templates Container - RWD Pickers
One of the objects inside the Rapid Web Designer Container is the RWD User Templates. The following section describes its contents.
Inside the RWD User Templates Container, you will find the original versions of the 5 current pickers that come with RWD, as well as the container inside which the scripts for some of the automation of RWD are held.
1) Shared Resources Picker
The Shared Resources picker is a place that is accessible by all RWD Builders who have web content containers (websites) that are members of the RWD Sites CG container group but they cannot add items to the picker. This picker is meant to contain container objects that will be ALIASED to user's sites when they pick a particular object. Curriculum, lesson plan websites, folders with policy documents, Shared Blog conferences, etc. can all be shared for use system-wide in user's websites. Make sure to set the permissions for the source objects in the picker to prevent the individual users from changing content in the shared sites unless you intend for them to be able to edit content (such as would be the case with message Blogs, etc.).
To add items to the Shared Resources picker, simply make an alias of the object you wish to share and drag it into the picker (SHIFT + drag)
2) New Site Object Picker
All RWD Builders who have web content containers (websites) that are members of the RWD Sites CG container group can access this picker from their sites but they cannot add items to the picker.
It is meant to provide the best method for users to add container objects to their website. Each object has attributes that are copied exactly to the user's website. Once copied (not aliased), the new container becomes the property of the user in their website and they can edit the contents of the objects provided you have set the permissions appropriately. It is very important to test these object before you add them to the picker to make sure the permissions, attributes, and layouts are correct before giving them to the users on your system.
Folders created using the picker have the appropriate RWD Toolbars for web publishing but folders created using the FirstClass menu commands do not so we encourage you to train users to ONLY use this picker to create the objects they need in their sites.
To add a container object to the picker, create the object and move it to the picker (original). Set all of the attributes to the way you wish them to be and then, using the properties window (get info in MAC), change the Category field to the Name you wish to have displayed in the picker, and set the NAME field to #4001 - all objects in the picker share the same name (#4001)
3) New RWD Page Picker
This picker is meant to contain LEAF objects (pages and documents) that you wish to make available to users to copy to their sites. When a user selects an item from the Page picker, a COPY is made of the object in the user's site. This functionality allows those with advanced skills in page creation (tables, images, etc) to create template pages that are then available to all users.
All RWD Builders who have web content containers (websites) that are members of the RWD Sites CG container group can access this picker from their sites but they cannot add items to the picker.
To add items to the Page Picker, create a page or document and drag it into the picker. Alternatively, you can create a copy of the original and drag the copy into the picker (CTRL +Drag, CMD +Drag in MAC). No renaming is required.
4) New Teacher Site Picker
Deploying ready-made teacher websites is a key value of RWD. Giving a working, well laid out and properly interlinked website to a teacher to start with dramatically reduces the training required to get going and increases the quality of sites. RWD ships with two example sites (both are identical but have different labels). We cannot stress enough the need to test a site before deploying it to hundreds or thousands of teachers!!
Adding websites to the picker (for example, lower school teacher site, middle school teacher site, high school sciences teacher site, etc), is simple. Create a site using the existing sites as a source (see Deploying a Teacher Site in the Admin form Help files for more information on using this picker)
To add a container object to the picker, create the site and move it to the picker (original). Set all of the attributes to the way you wish them to be and then, using the properties window (get info in MAC), change the Category field to the Name you wish to have displayed in the picker, and set the NAME field to #9001 - all objects in the picker share the same name (#9001)
5) New Admin Site Object Picker
This picker functions in an identical manner to the New Site Object Picker (2, above) except that it is only available to web content containers that are root websites (members of the RWD Root Sites CG). This picker is meant to contain objects that you don't with the average use to be able to use (Shared Website containers, portal container, and, in some cases, the Graphics Gallery, etc). Only RWDe Site Administrators or those with access to the root websites will be able to access this picker.
All other aspects and functionality are identical.
6) Automation Scripts (RWD 3 and Earlier)
This picker should not be touched or opened unless you are VERY familiar with FirstClass scripting and intend to modify the behavior of RWD Automation. Such action is NOT supported by FirstClass Depot!
C) RWD Console
Another object that is inside the Rapid Web Designer Container is the RWD Console. This object is user-customizable and will differ from site to site. The purpose of the console is to provide a place where some of the different objects and resources that are contained in RWD can be brought together and then be given to the RWD Site Administrators, or a subset of them for use in the business of administering RWD.
The RWD console will be discussed during your RWD implementation and configured for your particular needs.
