RWD Other Features Tab (Graphics Gallery Sub-tab)

The Other Features tab contains some controls that don't really fit anywhere else.  This functionality may expand as RWD evolves however, for the moment, the following are the controls available to you and a description of what they do.

1) Graphics Gallery - Image size restriction

Enter the largest image size (in kb) that you will allow to display in a user's graphics gallery page without creating a thumbnail.  Regardless of the amount of training given, it seems that some users can not resist putting very large images on their websites which can cause pages to load so slowly, they are almost useless on the web.  Since the introduction of the new Graphics Gallery, this is a more likely occurrence.  This feature on the RWDe Site Administrator Form is meant to protect users by causing images that exceed your threshold to still display but to load more quickly.
Note:  Thumbnailed images are of significantly lower quality than the original images they represent.

1) Pages Require Approval

Each RWD Page created in any sub-site can be set to a default state of unapproved or approved (set by FirstClass Depot upon delivery).  If the page is set to unapproved AND the administrator form requires that pages be approved, the page will not render on the web but instead will present to the web user an unapproved notice.

2) Approval Email

If a page is unapproved, the notice that appears on the web can contain a link that the user can click to send a message to the administrator.  The message will contain the location of the visited page so that the administrator or their designees can quickly find the page in question and decide to approve it or not.  The email address of the person with the responsibility of deciding if a page should be approved must be entered in this field.

3) Do Not remove Information Sidebar when Special Formats are used

Normally with RWD, when you display a conference or calendar with one of the special formats (drop down choices in the Navigation and Header Links Bar content areas), The information Sidebar, if visible, is suppressed.  This is done to give as much real estate to the FirstClass object you wish to display.   In some cases, you may wish to preserve the Information Sidebar regardless of the object being displayed on the page.  If this is the case, you can check this field to cause RWD to remove the suppression syntax from the link and allow the Information Sidebar to remain visible.

4) Allow Use of Global Control Feature

Background:

Global Control was introduced in RWD version 3 and functioned well.  It is a means of displaying a common banner and / or a scrolling message for all pages in all sites on a server, all controlled from a single form.  This is particularly useful for putting a school district's branding on all school website for example, or posting a scrolling message (with a link if desired) to all pages of all school sites (for example, closing all schools due to weather) with a single entry in the Global control form.

The distribution of the Global Control Feature is done on a site by site basis because it is possible in larger districts for there be a need to have several different Global Control groups (for example, some districts might have slightly different branding requirements for groups of schools in a specific sub-area of the district or a number of Area Superintendents who want control over the messages posted to their schools).

Many customer websites do not use the Global Control feature, largely because they were created prior to the feature being released and the customers have not yet implemented the feature by deploying Global Control (and now, in version 4 Code Insertion) to their websites.

Prior to version 9.1 of Internet Services, the RWD code that called the Global Control feature did not cause any problems at runtime if the Global Control and Code Insertion Features were not present in a particular site; a minor error would occur in the processing of the page but no performance or otherwise detrimental effects were observed.

When FirstClass Internet services reached version 9.1, we began to see significant caching issues and broken pages in sites that had the Global Control Code in their templates (RWD version 3 and up), but did not have the Global Control Feature actually deployed to their sites.

In order to mitigate the problem, we updated the RWD template set (ver 4.5) to BYPASS the Global Control Feature (and the Code Insertion Feature - see 5, below) UNLESS the RWDe Site Administrator specifically activated the feature(s) for their particular site.

This check box (4 in the diagram), activates the Global Control Feature of RWD.  Do NOT check the box unless you have deployed a Global Control Container to the site first.

Please see the documentation regarding Global Control and Code Insertion.  Click one of the links below or manually navigate to the correct Help File by finding the following in the RWD Documentation area:

RWD Documentation > About > Installed Material - RWD Application (and follow the Global Control Container Link)

This documentation is also available on this website

5) Use Code Insertion

Please read the Background information in item 4) above as it explains the issues around this feature.

This feature activates the Code Insertion feature of RWD for the current site.  Do NOT check this box unless you have already deployed a Code Insertion Container to your site.
Note: you only have to deploy a Code Insertion container to the site, it does not have to have any custom code in it to meet the requirement.

6) If using Google Analytics, Insert Google Analytics Code Here

Because we are so impressed with Google Analytics, we made it easier to use the service with RWD.  When you sign your site(s) up for Google Analytics, you are given a specific code that identifies your site to the Google Engine.  If you have this code, simply fill it into this field and RWD will begin sending data to Google Analytics that will give you a wide variety of information regarding site traffic.

RWD Other Features Tab (Navigation Sidebar Style)

1) Padding Left

When using embedded objects (conferences, calendars, Search) in the Navigation Sidebar, the objects by default take up the entire width of the Navigation Sidebar.  In some cases, particularly when you have a Graphical Image for the background of the Navigation Sidebar, you may wish to force the embedded objects to have some padding on either side between their edge and the edge of the Navigation Sidebar.  Use this field to set the padding that will be to the left of the embedded object.

2) Padding Right

Use this field to set the padding that will be to the right of the embedded object.

RWD Other Features Tab (Localization)

The localization tab introduced in version 4 or RWD allows you to set various tags and labels that were previously hard-coded in order to accomodate your particular language or design specifications.
